Dances with Turing

Looks to me a lot like virtual property, though my unfamiliarity with the Xbox means that I'm on thin ice here. Correct me if I'm wrong. I submit for your comments the idea that the reason many developers have a hard time finding anything of value not only from researchers, but often from their own players, is that they are, in effect, seeing a different world, all the time. They looked friendly enough--at least, no one had fruit ready to throw at us.

Consoles and Virtual Property

Not being a console player, I'm probably the last to notice the introduction of virtual property into console gaming. But this morning I saw the article by BBC news entitled "Online gaming costs set to rise." Terrible headline, and the subbie should be shot, but the upshot of this is that console game devs like Microsoft and EA are introducing "downloadable content" into their games. Which content costs money, and which looks quite a lot like the sorts of virtual assets we've gnawed over for the last couple of years here at Terra Nova.

Social Skills and Friendship Development

Thoughts on these topics? Thoughts on other topics that the military might fund? All this leads to a spartan muse about how much time it takes to play an MMOG these days (or any days). Why must the MMOG state-of-the-art be a scheme requiring constant attention and feeding. I submit for your comments the idea that the reason many developers have a hard time finding anything of value not only from researchers, but often from their own players, is that they are, in effect, seeing a different world, all the time.

Problem Solving Processes and Types of Knowledge Facilitated by MMOGs

To the casual observer, zerging may seem a form of virtualized hooliganism. Yet, it might also be seen as a natural consequence of the (arguable) first strategy (above all others) of good gamers: test the boundaries of your world, its rules, discover its patterns, and then pwn! Them. Zergs, by instinct, try to stretch the concept of the group to its natural conclusion: bigger is badder and badder is a safer griffon upon from to throttle loot from poor souls. Besides, very large zergs have an epic feel… or at least a colorful spread of color and character – as far as they eye can see - between the lagged screen refreshes, that is.

Games Pets Play

Maybe the issue is the "larger" community. It's always easy to abstract and oversimplify at that level. But I know that on an individual level, there are real conversations and collaborations going on. I don't want this to turn into some rosy "it's better than we think" or "can't we all just get along" thing, but I do think that perhaps the situation is not as dire as it's hyped to be. But then again, I haven't gotte my evals back yet.
